Top 5 Breakfast Cereals

Not TV related, but I'm taking a cue from the D.C. Sports Bog here, who asked DC United player Bobby Boswell about his cereal love, and what his top five cereals were. From the post:

See, when Boswell lived with his parents, he would go to the grocery store and buy literally 10 boxes of cereal at a time. (He really likes cereal.) Then
he moved out, and discovered that cereal was expensive. Thus, he had to be a bit
picky to avoid bankrupting himself on cereal, and he came up with his Top Five,
and when he went to the grocery store he would limit himself to the names on
that list.

His list, in no particular order:

  • Cinnamon Toast Crunch
  • Trix
  • Honey Nut Cheerios
  • Honey Smacks
  • Honey-Comb
I also take my cereal very seriously, as underlined by my reaction to Jared's recent egregious error in buying Kix, as if that were a cereal that anyone would actually want to eat. And Boswell's right, cereal IS expensive. So my buying habits are usually dictated by what is on sale.

But if I had my druthers, here are my top 5 cereals, also in no particular order.

  • Special K (For when I have fresh berries and feel healthy)
  • Sugar Golden Crisp (much better than Honey Smacks)
  • Capn Crunch (Beware of the Soggies)
  • Apple Jacks (One of my 5-Fruits-a-Day)
  • Crispix (See Special-K)

Honorable Mention: Honeycomb, Frosted Mini-Wheats (gets soggy too easily), Lucky Charms, Frosted Krispies.

What're your top 5?

You know, I'm not sure I'm comfortable living with someone who doesn't like Kix. It is just wrong.

Anyway, my top 5:

First, a note. Cereals should be mixed. Optimally, one cereal should be flakey or flake-like, I'm talking Raisin Bran and Rice Krispies, for example. And the other should be larger and more snackable. Therefore, I have two top fives.

FLAKE CEREALS

Honey Bunches of Oats (with Almonds) - Let's face it, you aren't a true cereal aficionado if you don't have at least one cereal of this ilk on your list.

Raisin Nut Bran - Better than Raisin Bran. That's right, I went there.

Special K with Wild Berries - Nutricious AND delicious

Great Grains Banana Nut Crunch - Mmmm, banana bread.

Basic 4 - It has all four food groups!

Honorable Mentions - Rice Krispies, Mueslix, Raisin Bran, Grape Nuts, Honey Nut Cheerios

NONFLAKE CEREALS

Kix - Subtly sweet.

Honeycomb - Excellent complement for a nonsweet flake cereal.

Crispix - How can it never get soggy? It makes no sense.

Apple Jacks - What can I say? We eat what we like.

Peanut Butter Crunch - Wow do I like peanut butter.

Honarable Mention: Crunchberry, Boo Berry!

By the way, Frosted Mini-Wheats is DEAD TO ME.

flake cereals are by definition boring as hell and in fact special K markets itself as one for trimming a few pounds for that bikini. The milk is more interesting than special K.

Emily - Not mixing cereal is like choosing to only have lettuce in your salad.

Wait, Jared, seriously? You would put Special K and Kix in the same bowl? That's absolute insanity.

Speaking of absolute insanity, a Sammy blog. WTF?

Don't be silly. It is like on Iron Chef. Given a certain ingredient, you have to find the right complement.

Kix, for example, is on the small side and only subtly sweet. So it best when paired with a clumping cereal, preferably one with a unique taste. Rice Krispies might work, possibly Special K with Strawberries, that would be decent. But I think you are best off with Honey Bunches of Oats, or maybe Raisin Bran, since it is a Bran flake.

No, Tori, other than maybe Gavin Weiss, the rest of us do not violate the sanctity of cereal.

The only time I ever allow for the mixing of cereals is when there is not enough at the bottom for a full bowl. Then maybe...MAYBE, do I mix.

I'd like to thank Jeff for his thoroughness, but the point of the exercise was to come up with one list of 5, no matter the healthiness. You failed.

If I get to the bottom of the bag and there's not enough for a full bowl, I just throw the remains in the trash. I'm serious business when it comes to cereal.
